Lee and Atkins-Porter Elementary Schools and E.W. Grove High School, where he was Valedictorian of his class, class president, president of the National Honor Society and editor of the yearbook. He also excelled as an Eagle Scout.

Dr. Warren attended Vanderbilt University on a Naval Reserve Officer's Training Corps scholarship, where he majored in chemistry. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity and graduated cum laude in 1956 with the degree of Bachelor of Science and was commissioned Ensign, United States Navy. At the conclusion of his three year military obligation in 1959, he was released from active duty, but continued on with the United States Naval Reserve, retiring with the rank of Commander in 1976.

He returned to Vanderbilt University on a National Defense Fellowship for graduate studies in chemistry and graduated in 1962 with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. He continued his studies at the University of California, Berkley, under Dr. Henry Rapaport in the field of the 'synthesis of heterocyclic drugs and natural products' at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. Concluding his post doctoral studies, Dr. Warren accepted a teaching position with the science department of George Peabody College in Nashville, where he remained until the merger of Peabody College with Vanderbilt University and established a scholarship in the graduate chemistry department at Peabody which was transferred to doctoral students at Vanderbilt following the merger of the two institutions. After leaving the active faculty, he engaged in several successful business ventures and farming.

In October of 1961 he married the former Norma Jean Hyatt of Covington, Tennessee. Mitch was known for his mature, peaceful and constant gracious demeanor. He brought his thoughtful fairness, humility and unflagging integrity to both family and friend, couched in a warm sense of humor, never hateful or scornful of any man. He had a large collection of classical music and was himself a trained classical pianist. Mitch loved history, sports, his church, hunting, fishing and making new friends the world over via the outreach of his ham radio hobby.

Most of all, he loved his wife of 55 years, Norma, and his two sons and their families along with a host of lifelong friends, dating back to grade and high school. His death is a great loss to a great number of admirers from multiple walks of life. He educated us all with his steady, devoted Christian walk and the use of his resources to bless young men and women with furtherance of their education, something he appreciated so decidedly.

The family wishes to give special recognition and thanks to Michael Mahlaule and David Loy, who occupy a special place in the hearts of this family because of the loving service and encouragement they provided over the extended period of their care.
